E-learning and Multimedia Translation

The next wave of the Digital Revolution

With a prevailing lifestyle in which people often find it difficult to participate in education or further learning, e-learning is quickly becoming the most popular way of learning new skills and technologies.  E-learning is slowly increasing its domain as working professionals across the world are looking online for educational materials which were previously only available at selected universities and institutes. Naturally the content-related companies and businesses are focusing on e-learning as the next wave of the boom in the Internet businesses.

E-learning modules related to management, technology, government services and school subjects require multimedia translation services too, as ever-widening services are prompting the giant e-learning players to introduce their courses and training modules into different languages to cater to the ever-growing global markets.  They are not content with the limitations of the current geographical boundaries.

In multimedia translation services, the interactive use of text, audio, video, still images, and graphics is converted from one language to another, or from analog form to a digital form suitable for desktop and palmtop browsing in a user-friendly format.  It can include blocks of text, illustrative graphics, films, animation, audio and video, which need to be converted into different languages to launch the courses for that particular market.  It can include:

·       DVD making

·       Dubbing according to the target market

·       CBT and e-learning

·       Games and animation

·       Flash movies

·       Interactive voice recognition etc.

In the multimedia sector , voice over & dubbing services and captioning & subtitling services are often included.  The voice prompts being used in the e-learning modules can be recorded, digitized and delivered on any media including: ftp, email, ISDN CODEC, R-DAT, CD-Rom, mini-disk, zip disk and audio cassette etc.  The digitized voice prompts and the recording session can be monitored via telephone, thus saving time as the client does not have to actually travel to do it.

‘You and Me’ - sponsored by GoLocalise

Little Soldier Productions
presents an adaptation of

‘You and Me’

Written by Roger Simeon
Directed by Bryony Shanahan

At RichMix

Dates: 1st June - 2nd June 2012

Straight off the back of a hugely successful run of Pakita in New York, and just before heading off to Madrid for new run, award-winning Spanish actress Patricia Rodriguez is teaming up with acclaimed Catalan actress Merce Ribot (Discombobulated) to present the British Premier of Roger Simeon’s Tu i Jo (You and Me). The show will headline the much-anticipated Catalan Festival at London’s Rich Mix on 1st and 2nd of June.

Directed by Bryony Shanahan (dir. of Perffection, assistant dir. of Bound) the company is presenting an adaptation of Simeon’s absurd text in direct response to the sense of displacement experienced by the performers, drawing on their roots, cultural identities and languages whilst asking what it is like to be a foreigner living abroad.

Set against a backdrop of a battered rug and mountains of boxes, the piece presents two elderly sisters who face life helplessly. As they cling onto their proud heritage and memories of a simpler time the action darts from the past to the present, between home and foreign lands and from the hilarious to the tender. Through multiple languages, physical comedy and visual passages we see the effects of a lifetime spent searching for home.

Individuals within the company have worked with the likes of Philippe Gaulier, Uri Roodner, Kirsty Housley, Paul Warwick (China Plate), Jonathan Holloway (Red Shift Theatre), Aitor Basauri (Spymonkey), Paul Hunter (Told by an Idiot), Jesse Briton (Bear Trap Theatre) and April De Angelis.

Performer Mercè Ribot is currently touring Discombulated with ‘Publick Transport’ devised by herself and Angus Barr and directed by Spymonkey’s Aitor Basauri. She can also be seen in KIN by Move to Stand at the Brighton Fringe 2012.

This is the second show of Little Soldier Productions and the first time that You and Me will be performed outside of Spain.

There are millions of people who use the Internet to facilitate their daily lives. They search for information and products, make purchases, sell goods and so much more. Taking advantage of these services has been made possible thanks to website translation.

As a direct result of website translation, when you buy a product or service from a website you are able to understand what that website is stating. This has been made possible because that website has been translated into a language you can understand. People buy products online from businesses every minute of every day, all around the world. Website translation has become very popular as it helps to convey your message more effectively to your core audience.

Website translation services reaches out to international markets effortlessly. If you want to target foreign-speaking countries to sell your product or service you should have the website content translated into their language. This gives you the opportunity to capture online users of any particular language, thus increasing your marketing potential.

When website translation is done it is not simply a matter of translating an English language website into that of another language. The content of the website needs to take into account the accurate atmosphere of that specific market and the entire site needs to be in touch with that market area's society, culture and linguistics.

A professional company handles all elements of the translation for you. You can secure service providers that provide experts dedicated to each language as well as having excellent knowledge of countries that speak that language. A professional company will provide you with the service you need to reach mass audiences through an effective and well-understood website.

Your website in multiple languages allows you to attract a larger audience in your specified market. With so much information and opportunities for sales and purchases available through the internet, it only makes sense to present that information in a language your target audience fully understands. You want your audience to be comfortable with what they access online, and language comprehension is a major component in achieving that comfort.

The greater the likelihood of your message being understood, the greater the potential for increased audience numbers and understanding.  If you want to increase audience understanding, customer satisfaction and your bottom line, website translation is essential.

The importance of translation

Why translation and language experts are needed?

Nobody has ever been able to survive living in isolation. Solitary confinement is said to be harder than even capital punishment. Being alone, working without talking to anyone, being all by yourself etc. makes it very hard in this world. Being able to share thoughts, feelings, ideas, emotions and information is the essence of all kinds of communication, be it between two people or a group. This is how language evolved which acts as a medium of communication.

But as is visible to all, with the advent of globalization, and the geographical boundaries shrinking around the globe, the world has indeed become a very small place to live in. This can mainly be attributed to advances in technology, which help people from anywhere in the world to be able to interact with one another in real time. The only barrier to this kind of communication is the language barrier – the lack of language knowledge between the two people involved. Often, one finds oneself in a situation where it is necessary to speak to people who are not native speakers of one’s own language.

To cater for this kind of a barrier to communication, we require translation services from one language to another. These days English and Spanish are the most widely spoken languages around the world, so it comes as no surprise that the services of both English and Spanish translators are in high demand. These two languages are spoken in many different countries throughout the world.

The services provided by these translators are particularly needed by most business organizations. And no matter how small or big the organization, they are all in need of such translators who can communicate to people of different languages and open up the international business market. This is one of the primary reasons why many websites of European organizations are now translated into both English and Spanish. Europe and America have the strongest economies and dominate the world even today. All the more reason for you to get your organization’s collateral translated into Spanish and English to keep your business growing.

Script and content translation trends

The market size and intricacies involved

Translation services are slowly becoming a flourishing new age business across the globe.  More and more websites, individuals, units and recording studios are offering these important services.  The reason for this is the globalization of businesses and increased interaction of the communities trading in music, software, games, media, entertainment and technology.  Publishers are always looking for script translation services, such as English translation or Spanish translation to local languages and vice versa.

Manual translation is the best form of translation as it maintains the originality and native style of language while doing translation work, whereas software, scripts and web-based translation tools such as Google Translate have a long way to go before they can produce natural and accurate translation services.

Website translation is also gaining popularity, as, according to a survey, more than 900 million Internet users prefer to use their native language when they are online.  Script translation has become a valuable tool as more than 220 million Internet users prefer to visit websites in their native language.  Obviously marketing professionals cannot afford to ignore such a huge online audience.

English translation and Spanish translation services are in fashion nowadays as both English and Spanish are considered to be prominent languages and are spoken across the globe.  Latin America is dominated by Spanish speakers.  In the United States, Hispanics are also a major population group. A surprising fact revealed recently is that nowadays more than 50% of online trade is happening in languages other than English.  The total web content in English has fallen from 60% to 30%, which shows how big the market for translation services is.

So, if your website is only in English you will not reach half of your global audience. Localization is increasing and every ambitious entrepreneur and organization is keen on projecting themselves and their products in different languages of the world in order to maximize their reach and target market.

A few things to keep in mind while going for language translation are:

A.   Check out the credentials and past achievements of the translator.  Look out for a reference, recommendation or simply a sample of their previous work. Make sure they have the required level of skills and experience to carry out your task.
B.   Explain your translation needs clearly to a translator, in terms of the purpose of the content and the target audience.
C.   Do not make use of online translation software, as these programs simply cannot translate the exact meaning of complex content.

Video game translation and voice over

Trendy jobs arising as the Internet appeal grows

Video game translation
has entered its next phase, where the heat is on and countries such as Japan, Korea, China and the USA all want to get a slice of the market.  To land a job in video game translation or video game localization, you will need a few basic skills and the inclination to jump into this ever-changing world with ruthless competition all around and the pressure of deadlines to handle.  Video games are getting more advanced and extensively situational and experimental, and so is their content.  As a video game translation professional, you will need to have tons of energy, along with the continuous availability of manpower, so that if one member of the team takes a break another one can take over.

To qualify to enter the world of video game voice over and translation, you need to have a basic knowledge of video games and their intricacies.  You can also earn through writing reviews as hundreds of games are launched every month, and the gamers do not have the time to try and test every game, so they depend on the gaming review sites.  These sites make a lot of money through their paying members and advertisements as thousands of people flock to these sites to find trusted reviews of a particular game.   With thousands of games being produced every month, the need for translation and video game localization is also increasing.  It is not limited to just the voice over, it goes much further than that, including the translation and localization of rows and rows of text as the dialogue of the game’s characters is displayed on the screen.

Another attraction for creative youngsters to go into this profession is its casual attitude and attire.  There is no need for formal dress. Everything depends on your creativity and ability to work long hours. This is what qualifies you for the profession.  Sometimes, you may have to spend time squinting through a text on the screen or speaking as a voice over artist, but it is fun and exciting to work for a gaming process.  The market of gaming is on the rise all over the world, so a teenager in Asia must be playing the same version of the game as his counterpart in the USA.  And this is where good translation services come into the picture.  The languages in which most of the game trade is happening are Asian languages such as Japanese, Korean and Chinese and European languages such as German, French, Spanish, Russian and Dutch as well as English. So proficiency in at least one of these languages, as well as English, may find you many employers with good offers.

GoLocalise thinks globally and this is why we have equipped our two-state-of–the–art studios in central London with ISDN. We want our client to be able to monitor the recording sessions and give their suggestions directly to the voice over artist in the booth. ISDN also allows us to transmit a live feed of our recordings in high fidelity, enabling us to share our excellent work with clients remotely while the recording is happening. ISDN powered studios have the capability to connect with remote users across the globe. ISDN is an acronym for Integrated Services Digital Network. ISDN is a service provided by most telecoms operators that allows users to transmit vast amounts of data faster than regular transmissions via a standard telephone line. ISDN is the equivalent of a digital telephone line. The ISDN system consists of two channels: D-Channels (used for signalling and call setup) and B-Channels (data channels). Each B-channel can be used independently as a separate data channel (or telephone line), so you can have two separate connections (or calls) in progress at the same time. This allows GoLocalise to transmit larger amounts of data than through a standard telephone set-up. A single B-channel can carry 64kb of data per second - twice as much as an analogue phone line. ISDN systems have a higher bandwidth, so data can be sent faster. Due to the fact that ISDN lines are digital and that the information can be compressed by a codec, the quality of the call is also substantially better than through a standard telephone line. ISDN lines can be used for ordinary telephone calls, but the audio will still sound like a normal telephone call unless a coding process is used, and this is where the codec comes in when thinking about an ISDN powered studio. The codec's function is to compress and un-compress (or COde and DECode) the 1.4 bits of data needed to transmit high fidelity audio into the 128 kbits of space available over the ISDN line, thus generating a considerable improvement in the quality of the decodified information received at the other end of the line.

Dubbing, animation and lip sync services

Dubbing is the process of recording and replacing voices on a motion picture, animation or television clip with the aim of substituting the original audio that was captured while shooting with the corresponding translation in a different language. Together with lip sync, dubbing is the most common process required to complete an audiovisual project. Production companies often need to dub actors’ voices in order to correct mistakes or to avoid background noise, but dubbing is mostly used to translate an audiovisual product from one language into another. Lip sync (lip synchronisation) is the dubbing technique used in close-ups and extreme close-ups - scenes in which the lips of on-screen actors are clearly visible and the translated text needs to be adapted to the movement of the lips. GoLocalise, apart from being a dedicated and experienced translation company, also provides full solutions for your audio needs whenever dubbing for film, animations or lip sync are required. In our state-of-the-art recording studio, we produce a wide range of work that goes beyond the “typical” dubbing and lip sync services. Working with an experienced team of in-house sound engineers, GoLocalise is able to offer solutions for other services related to dubbing, animation and lip sync such as audio fx sync, phrase sync, broadcast audio arrangement, sound fx generation by our foley artist, voice mixing, foley sound mixing, and dialogue cleaning and restoration. GoLocalise offers a centralised solution for all your multimedia projects: dubbing, animation or lip sync. Our clients can rest assured that we will offer the best quality and will meet their budget.

ADR voice over services

Have you ever wondered how movies make the dialogues you hear on screen so neat and clear? They use a trick called ADR. ADR has many names: some use the acronym ADR that stands for Automated Dialogue Replacement or Additional Dialogue Recording, while some just use the terms “dubbing” or “looping”. Here at GoLocalise we regularly take on ADR jobs and help our clients and producers by replacing noisy audio from the day of the shoot, or for situations where recording dialogue was simply not practical or where the results were not satisfactory. We have worked on ADR projects for Hollywood blockbusters, independent movies, cartoons, video games and short films for many different clients, always meeting their budgets. Our two state-of-the-art recording studios in central London are equipped with an ISDN connection so that your ADR recording sessions can be monitored and directed from anywhere in the world.

In fact, by 2008, in the UK alone, the audio book industry reached a total value of £80M, catching the attention of many publishers that turned to the audio book, audiobooks, audio guides and audible spoken word as a new form to promote new titles. At GoLocalise, as we are all language experts, we love working with everything that involves the spoken word.
