Send Your Project Viral with the Help of the UK’s Leading Maldivian Dhivehi Subtitling Company.

Subtitles occur on the screen as text in reaction to the characters’ speech or dialogue. They are typically used to transform media into a language that the audience can comprehend. If subtitles are not accurate to the spoken word on screen, the viewers’ understanding of the content can be negatively impacted. Precisely created subtitles, on the other hand, enhance the value of your video content.

That’s why we have professional linguists in place to create subtitles for your film or other video content. Our team consists of both local and foreign resources to ensure that every uttered word in another language is correctly translated.

Maldivian Dhivehi Language Facts

Dhivehi, sometimes referred by alternative spelling Divehi – also known as Maldivian, is an Indo-Aryan language predominantly spoken by about 350,000 people in the Republic of Maldives where it is the national language. It is also the native language of nearly 10,000 people in the island of Minicoy in Union territory of Lakshadweep, India where the Mahl dialect of Dhivehi is spoken. As a whole, it is the mother tongue of the Dhivehis, who inhabit the historic region of the Maldive Islands comprising what is now the aforesaid places. Written Maldivian > Maldivian has a continuous written history of about eight hundred years. The earliest writings were on the Lōmāfānu (copper-plate grants) of the 12th and 13th centuries. Early inscriptions on coral stone have also been found. The oldest inscription found to date is an inscription on a coral stone, which is estimated to be from around the 7th or 8th century. Maldivian is based on Sanskrit foundations and it developed in relative isolation with little contact with the other languages until the 12th century. Since the 16th century, Maldivian has been written in a unique script called Thaana which is written from right to left, like that of Aramaic and Arabic (with which it shares several common diacritics for vowel sounds). The foundation of the historical linguistic analysis of both Maldivian and Sinhalese was laid by Wilhelm Geiger (1856–1943). In Geiger’s comparative study of Maldivian (Mahl) and Sinhalese, he assumes that Maldivian is a dialectal offspring of Sinhalese and therefore is a “daughter language” of Sinhalese. However, the material he collected was not sufficient to judge the “degree of relationship” of Maldivian and Sinhalese. Geiger concludes that Maldivian must have split from Sinhalese not earlier that the 10th century CE. However, there is nothing in the history of these islands or Sinhalese chronicles, even in legendary form that alludes to a migration of Sinhalese people which results such a connection. Dialects > Major dialects of Maldivian are Maliku, Huvadhu, Mulaku, Addu, Haddhunmathee and Maliku, with the Maliku dialect of the Maldivian capital being considered the standard. In Mincoy the Maliku dialect is spoken and is known as Mahl. Maldivian is closely related to, though not mutually intelligible with, Sinhalese. It has been influenced by and aborbed words from a number of languages, including Arabic, French, Persian, Portuguese, Urdu and English.
