E-learning and Multimedia Translation
The next wave of the Digital Revolution
With a prevailing lifestyle in which people often find it difficult to participate in education or further learning, e-learning is quickly becoming the most popular way of learning new skills and technologies. E-learning is slowly increasing its domain as working professionals across the world are looking online for educational materials which were previously only available at selected universities and institutes. Naturally the content-related companies and businesses are focusing on e-learning as the next wave of the boom in the Internet businesses.
E-learning modules related to management, technology, government services and school subjects require multimedia translation services too, as ever-widening services are prompting the giant e-learning players to introduce their courses and training modules into different languages to cater to the ever-growing global markets. They are not content with the limitations of the current geographical boundaries.
In multimedia translation services, the interactive use of text, audio, video, still images, and graphics is converted from one language to another, or from analog form to a digital form suitable for desktop and palmtop browsing in a user-friendly format. It can include blocks of text, illustrative graphics, films, animation, audio and video, which need to be converted into different languages to launch the courses for that particular market. It can include:
· DVD making
· Dubbing according to the target market
· CBT and e-learning
· Games and animation
· Flash movies
· Interactive voice recognition etc.
In the multimedia sector , voice over & dubbing services and captioning & subtitling services are often included. The voice prompts being used in the e-learning modules can be recorded, digitized and delivered on any media including: ftp, email, ISDN CODEC, R-DAT, CD-Rom, mini-disk, zip disk and audio cassette etc. The digitized voice prompts and the recording session can be monitored via telephone, thus saving time as the client does not have to actually travel to do it.

Little Soldier Productions presents an adaptation of
‘You and Me’
Written by Roger Simeon
Directed by Bryony Shanahan
At RichMix
Dates: 1st June - 2nd June 2012
Straight off the back of a hugely successful run of Pakita in New York, and just before heading off to Madrid for new run, award-winning Spanish actress Patricia Rodriguez is teaming up with acclaimed Catalan actress Merce Ribot (Discombobulated) to present the British Premier of Roger Simeon’s Tu i Jo (You and Me). The show will headline the much-anticipated Catalan Festival at London’s Rich Mix on 1st and 2nd of June.
Directed by Bryony Shanahan (dir. of Perffection, assistant dir. of Bound) the company is presenting an adaptation of Simeon’s absurd text in direct response to the sense of displacement experienced by the performers, drawing on their roots, cultural identities and languages whilst asking what it is like to be a foreigner living abroad.
Set against a backdrop of a battered rug and mountains of boxes, the piece presents two elderly sisters who face life helplessly. As they cling onto their proud heritage and memories of a simpler time the action darts from the past to the present, between home and foreign lands and from the hilarious to the tender. Through multiple languages, physical comedy and visual passages we see the effects of a lifetime spent searching for home.
Individuals within the company have worked with the likes of Philippe Gaulier, Uri Roodner, Kirsty Housley, Paul Warwick (China Plate), Jonathan Holloway (Red Shift Theatre), Aitor Basauri (Spymonkey), Paul Hunter (Told by an Idiot), Jesse Briton (Bear Trap Theatre) and April De Angelis.
Performer Mercè Ribot is currently touring Discombulated with ‘Publick Transport’ devised by herself and Angus Barr and directed by Spymonkey’s Aitor Basauri. She can also be seen in KIN by Move to Stand at the Brighton Fringe 2012.
This is the second show of Little Soldier Productions and the first time that You and Me will be performed outside of Spain.

The importance of translation
Why translation and language experts are needed?
Nobody has ever been able to survive living in isolation. Solitary confinement is said to be harder than even capital punishment. Being alone, working without talking to anyone, being all by yourself etc. makes it very hard in this world. Being able to share thoughts, feelings, ideas, emotions and information is the essence of all kinds of communication, be it between two people or a group. This is how language evolved which acts as a medium of communication.
But as is visible to all, with the advent of globalization, and the geographical boundaries shrinking around the globe, the world has indeed become a very small place to live in. This can mainly be attributed to advances in technology, which help people from anywhere in the world to be able to interact with one another in real time. The only barrier to this kind of communication is the language barrier – the lack of language knowledge between the two people involved. Often, one finds oneself in a situation where it is necessary to speak to people who are not native speakers of one’s own language.
To cater for this kind of a barrier to communication, we require translation services from one language to another. These days English and Spanish are the most widely spoken languages around the world, so it comes as no surprise that the services of both English and Spanish translators are in high demand. These two languages are spoken in many different countries throughout the world.
The services provided by these translators are particularly needed by most business organizations. And no matter how small or big the organization, they are all in need of such translators who can communicate to people of different languages and open up the international business market. This is one of the primary reasons why many websites of European organizations are now translated into both English and Spanish. Europe and America have the strongest economies and dominate the world even today. All the more reason for you to get your organization’s collateral translated into Spanish and English to keep your business growing.
Script and content translation trends
The market size and intricacies involved
Translation services are slowly becoming a flourishing new age business across the globe. More and more websites, individuals, units and recording studios are offering these important services. The reason for this is the globalization of businesses and increased interaction of the communities trading in music, software, games, media, entertainment and technology. Publishers are always looking for script translation services, such as English translation or Spanish translation to local languages and vice versa.
Manual translation is the best form of translation as it maintains the originality and native style of language while doing translation work, whereas software, scripts and web-based translation tools such as Google Translate have a long way to go before they can produce natural and accurate translation services.
Website translation is also gaining popularity, as, according to a survey, more than 900 million Internet users prefer to use their native language when they are online. Script translation has become a valuable tool as more than 220 million Internet users prefer to visit websites in their native language. Obviously marketing professionals cannot afford to ignore such a huge online audience.
English translation and Spanish translation services are in fashion nowadays as both English and Spanish are considered to be prominent languages and are spoken across the globe. Latin America is dominated by Spanish speakers. In the United States, Hispanics are also a major population group. A surprising fact revealed recently is that nowadays more than 50% of online trade is happening in languages other than English. The total web content in English has fallen from 60% to 30%, which shows how big the market for translation services is.
So, if your website is only in English you will not reach half of your global audience. Localization is increasing and every ambitious entrepreneur and organization is keen on projecting themselves and their products in different languages of the world in order to maximize their reach and target market.
A few things to keep in mind while going for language translation are:
A. Check out the credentials and past achievements of the translator. Look out for a reference, recommendation or simply a sample of their previous work. Make sure they have the required level of skills and experience to carry out your task.
B. Explain your translation needs clearly to a translator, in terms of the purpose of the content and the target audience.
C. Do not make use of online translation software, as these programs simply cannot translate the exact meaning of complex content.
